Yogaku, meaning “music from across the ocean” in Japanese, is a style of Japanese music that has adopted western music notation and theoretical ideas rather than using the already existing forms in japan. To reach the point of full fruition it took a long process.  From the Christian(1549-1638) with the coming of Portuguese missionaries to Meiji(1868-1912) with the establishment of the Tokyo School of Music.
